Build an MVP for an AI-powered app that uses facial recognition technology to reunite lost pets with their owners
Machine Learning | Mobile App | MVP | Waterfall & Agile Methodology

Challenge
The first step was to develop an AI engine that could quickly scan images of dogs and compare them to images in our database with a success rate of over 90%. Next, we needed to build the mobile app for pet owners to register their pets and build a lost and found community. The client wanted to build a network of pet lovers who were willing to help locate missing pets.
Approach
We started with a kick-off meeting involving a Machine Learning and Advanced AI team to build the AI engine and a team of design and branding experts, as well as Android and iOS developers. From there, we identified a road map with milestones and converted that into a detailed list of deliverables which was followed by a resource planning exercise. As soon as we agreed meeting cadence with internal teams, clients and their stakeholders, and the deliverables were scoped and signed off by the client, we embarked on completing the AI engine proof of concept within 4 weeks. We then moved on to design and branding before starting on the mobile app build which was created in Flutter.
Outcome
The system was incredibly efficient and accurate, which (at launch) quickly identified 130 breeds and identified potential matches with over 90% accuracy. We employed adaptive colour recognition allowing low quality images to be processed effectively. The app’s facial recognition technology was impressive, using 17 face markers per photo, allowing pet owners to upload a photo of their pet and receive alerts if a potential match was found.
We built an app that was intuitive and provided quick registration set up. The team ensured the API response was accurate and super-fast. Images were processed within seconds and results rendered in the app in under 5.
The result was a truly transformative product that brought together cutting-edge technology and human compassion.
The app was piloted in Bangalore in late 2022 and pet owners were reported to be thrilled by the tool that helped them find their missing pets quickly and efficiently.
