Case Study

A fully customised CMS & workflow solution for dictionary provider

CMS development | API | Feature development | Agile Methodology

Challenge
The team was tasked with building a system that would enable quick publishing and achieve various operational goals, such as flexibility and speed of deployment, as well as enhancing the data pipeline process between the dictionary data licensor and licensee. We also needed to develop a solution to fully customise the requirements of lexical data for an online dictionary in English, New American English and Spanish / English bilingual.

Approach
Build a fully customisable CMS using Ruby on Rails as the core language providing the ability to tightly integrate both front and back-end components. This solution would also accommodate regular large scale data updates via an API connecting the CMS to the data. We ran bi-weekly sprint planning sessions, daily internal stand ups and weekly status meetings and regular retrospectives and backlog grooming sessions were performed. All documentation was captured in JIRA and Confluence making information accessible to all.

Outcome
The CMS named Remarkable allowed for quick feature implementation such as Trending Words, Quizzes and Word of the Day. The team also developed sophisticated dictionary data look up functionality enabling searching for entries and parts of entries by content, features, and metadata.

The client was based in San Francisco and we were in London, but despite the different time zones, through our meeting cadence and ability to liaise directly with each other via Slack, both teams worked synchronously and all team members contributed to feature ideas and solutions.
